A recent email question sparked this!
You don't have to promote yourself, you have to promote the entertainer.
You have to make friends with promoters and learn the nights you want to be a part of.
When you learn the music, the crowd and build a relationship with the promoter you can ask them for an opportunity...
You better make sure that when you DJ you do better than whoever they had there before. If not, you won't create hype and get called back.
Mix CDs, Stickers, T-Shirts, Facebook, Twitter, Posters, everything works and you must implement all tools possible to get your message across.
To me the most important thing was always being ready when the opportunity presented itself and being able to capitalize by being as versatile as possible. Again, you could self promote as much as you want, if when you get behind the decks, you don't know what your doing, you will sooner or later be outed as a lame.
1. Practice
2. Network
3. Capitalize
